what to do about mold on the dirt, african violet?
my wife recently got an african violet & repotted it with potting soil meant for this plant. now it has a white moldy stuff on top of the soil. will this hurt anything? what caused it? what do we do? thanks
I love African Violets, a carry-over from my grandmother.
You can remove the moldy stuff layer and throw it away. Don't water again until the soil is dry to touch.
I just hope that you aren't over-watering the plant as they do rot easily from soil that's kept wet..
I have always watered my "AV" from the base of the flower pot that I keep in a saucer (or similar). I never water from the top to avoid the mold and the rot. The roots will drink from the bottom.
As a little bit of extra information, if the leaves are dusty you can always gently clean/brush them with another AV leaf!
Should a leaf get broken off, you can put the stem in water and quite often it will grow roots. You can then plant it.
