Are there any black pine trees in Florida?
I work in a Christmas shop and I was looking at an artificial black tree with a co-worker. She says that there are real black pine trees in Florida in the everglades. I can't find any proof of this on the internet. She says they are really black and not just dark green. The only black pine I could find was the Japanese black pine and it isn't black at all.
The black pine is also called Austrian pine, and its scientific name is "Pinus nigra" (That name should be italicized). The tree is a native of Europe and Western Asia and was introduced in the United States as an ornamental in the late eighteenth century. It is a very common tree where I live (Upstate New York), and also very hardy. I can state as an absolute fact that they are not literally black in color. I know it is very tolerant to a lot of different soil types and all but the most extreme temperatures. However, according to this USDA plant data base range map it is not present in Florida (http://plants.usda.gov/java/profile?symbol=PINI). As a caveat, I know that those range maps are not chiseled in stone. Hopefully, if someone from Florida has identified one there, they will post it.
She may be talking about a tree with very dark bark, but as the person above stated, leaves that contain chlorophyll (conifers included) are most typically green because they contain green chlorophyll pigments. I have seen white pines (Pinus strobus) with very dark, almost black bark on their trunks.
Also, there may be some unknown factor within the local environment that is causing the leaves to exhibit a very dark color. The trees may reacting to a disease, or they may be blighted due to a fungus. Annosus root rot affects conifers in the South, and the bark around the conks that form can become blackened.
