Heat travels by radiation, convection and conduction
air spaces are good insulators of heat. Examples waffle weave long johns, bulky sweaters, layers, fiberglass insulation,[thicker widths used in colder climates],birds fluffing their feathers, down jackets, double pane windows with air between.
