Flute structure questions?
I was looking at the different flutes from YAMAHA, and I found all these terms that I have no idea what it means or that if the options are different...
For example, take a look at http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/ContentDetail/ModelSeriesDetail.html?CNTID=593&CTID=237500 at the spicifications. What the heck is a bumper and what is the difference between a cork bumper and a neoprene bumper?
What is the "ring keys" saying??
What does the "CY cut" in the Headjoint section mean? and about the screw type, what does "Tapered pivot with nylon inserts" different from "Straight; Headed pivot" (Model 321)

You clearly need to do a lot more research about flute terminology before you spend a dime! the site of J L Smith has some good explanations, as does the site of www.jennifercluff.com. For at least what you have asked so far:
Bumpers are the little legs on the back side of the keys that prevent them from opening beyond a certain point. They have a little pad on them made of felt, cork, or synthetic rubber (neoprene) so that they open and close silently.
Ring keys are the five open-hole keys.
CY is but one of the possible cuts of the embouchure hole - each kind of cut gives difference response characteristics in the production of the tone. There is not a *best* one - there is whatever suits YOU best. You must be advanced enough to tell them apart.
The adjustment screws are prone to slippage from vibration, unless they are specially made - there is more than one way to do this. Tapered screws will never *bottom out* - go so far down the hole as to be useless. Nylon inserts help the screws stay put, in the place where the tech adjusts them. The better flutes will have more complicated screws assemblies - the BEST flutes (professional models costing many thousands of dollars) often have NO screws, and all adjustments are done with carbonized paper shims. I had a high-end boutique-maker flute like that a few years ago (sold it to a collector) - it was a stinker to get fixed, but then EXTREMELY stable.
Please look at other flute than Yamaha. Very lately, THEIR quality has slipped - and now the best student flutes are of other makes. Go to www.fluteworld.com and look around. Good luck.
